HAMILTON, Ohio – The Hamilton Joes dropped their exhibition opener to the Cincinnati Stars 13-8 Friday night. Cincinnati used a five-run seventh inning and solid relief pitching at the end of the game to seal the win at Foundation Field.

It was a tough night for starting pitching as both teams scored two runs in the first inning of a game that saw five lead changes.

Right-hander Colin Shaw started for Hamilton and only lasted three innings. He gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. Jordan Liette posted similar numbers on the mound for the Stars. He also gave up six runs (two earned) on seven hits and five walks in four and two-thirds innings pitched.

The Joes led 7-6 going into the seventh inning before the Stars piled on five runs. Joes’ reliever T.J. Page struggled mightily by walking six batters and throwing six wild pitches. Ultimately, he was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs.

Former Joes’ pitcher Brad Krohman earned the win for the Stars. Krohman played an integral part in Hamilton’s Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League Championship in 2010 and played a key role against his former team, allowing just one earned run.

Stars’ closer Jordan Butcher notched the save by holding the Joes hitless over the final three frames. The sidearmer also struck out four.

Outfielders Jeff Smith and Ethan McAlpine each recorded three hits for Hamilton. Catcher Tommy Ricciardi and Smith knocked in two runs apiece while McAlpine, Cody Leichman and Nick Saathoff each tallied an RBI.

Center fielder Matt Peden racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Cincinnati Stars.

The teams combined for 24 hits and each team stranded nine runners.

The Joes continue their exhibition schedule tonight against the Cheviot Patriots. First pitch at Foundation Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
